A little more about Southbound 75

In a rare meeting backstage at Cincinnati’s Music Hall, music legend Prince asked Southbound 75 singer-songwriter, Mark Lorenzo, “Do you believe the cream will rise to the top?...” After responding that he did, Prince continued, “...Then you have nothing to worry about.”

Southbound 75’s story started when Radio Promotion legend, Bill Scull heard writer Mark Lorenzo’s song, “Little Breakdown” at an ASCAP demo review session. Scull, who has worked in theindustry for years including with Clive Davis, singled him out, signed Mark to his label, and sent him out to record his label’s first CD.

“The thing I learned from Clive Davis is that the song is king…and Mark Lorenzo has those songs,” Scull said.
Lorenzo’s talent also caught the attention of publisher Jan Seedman (who discovered Nickelback for RoadRunner Records and had a hand in finding other acts like Stone Temple Pilots and Filter), “Mark knows how to come up with a melody... the songs just don’t get tired - ever.”

Southbound75 played their first show in December of 2018 and have already started making a name for themselves. They have already played from Ohio to Key West, been invited to play the Suwannee River Music Festival and played multiple shows every day at the Florida State Fair in February. The band has played almost every weekend since August 2020 and that includes an opening slot for legendary band Blackfoot.
Southbound 75 has accomplished an extraordinary amount of success in their short time as a band, even through the Covid year of 2020. Though most of the country was shut down duringCovid, Southbound75 thrived, expanding their base throughout Florida and the Southeast, with show commitments extending well into late 2022.
Their new record, Tales From The Black Swamp, (Bad Jeu Jeu/Copperline/The Orchard) was produced by Nashville hit-maker Bill McDermott, whose past projects include Brett Eldredge,Michael Ray, George Strait, Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley.
The band’s first single “Spilled Champagne” was featured on CMT’s “The Roundup” playlist on Spotify that includes the week’s biggest releases.
The video for “Spilled Champagne” debuted on The Country Network and was added to CMT.com
The band is managed by Dewayne Brown of BrownLee Entertainment in Franklin, TN and is working with a number of top booking agents in the business.
The band is made up of great musicians including Justin Pietrowski on Lead Guitar. Justin is an American Blues Foundation Hall of Fame inducted guitarist whose awards include, IndependentArtist of the Year, Album of the Year and Single of the Year.
Mark’s songs have been used on TV shows, sports programming, DVDs, Cartoons and more such as; “ESPN College Football;” “Shark” (CBS); “90210” (CW); “Threshold” (CBS); “Girlfriends” (CW) and “3lbs” on (CBS).
The band is endorsed by many sponsors including Taylor Guitars, Gone Country Hats, Red Monkey Accessories, Bosphorus Cymbals & Scorpion Drumsticks.
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/64591302022-01-22T11:11:33-05:002022-03-09T11:43:22-05:00The Invigorating Sounds of Piel

I was introduced to the invigorating sounds of Piel at a Hunnypot show in 2015.

When I heard songs, such as “C.O.A.T” and “Babble On,” I was struck by the fact that I couldn’t easily categorize the band’s sound, which is a good thing. It had elements of rock, EDM and wisps of R&B – not a combination you hear very often. Still, the songs had a commercial radio quality to them, which could easily lead to surefire hits.

I also thought to myself that this band should be signed to a label and marketed to modern rock radio. Not working with any labels at the time, there wasn’t an opportunity to get them a deal.

I continued to stay in touch over the next few years with lead singer, Tiki Lewis and bassist, Jawnee Danger, the founders of the group. From time to time, I would check out their live show.

TURNING THE CORNER

Fast forward to last year, the band had already played Ukraine to enthusiastic audiences (made possible by guitarist Yegor Mytrofanov) and nabbing some opening slots for acts, such as 311 and Dhani Harrison. Piel also picked up some specialty airplay on KROQ (“Rodney on the ROQ”), Indie 103.1 (Darren Revell), KNNN in Redding, CA “Hella Radio,” (Jesse Angelo) and Internet radio inside and outside the U.S. Still, no solid bites from labels.

I decided to try and move things forward for the band after a show at Molly Malone’s by connecting them with producer, Cisco De Luna (who is also a Cadium Music writer), to see what Tiki, Jawnee and Cisco might be able to come up with in the studio. De Luna took some pre-existing, but unreleased demos and produced them, elevating the tracks to what is now a commercially viable album. Songs, such as “Easy As It Feels” and “The Sound” are future hits and radio re-currents. The recordings, hopefully, will be made available to the public this year.

WHERE THINGS ARE AT

As of this writing, L.A. radio continues to support Piel (KCRW’s Valida is a fan and has played the band on her show) and a video for “Easy As It Feels,” is in production, directed by British actors Adam Fielding and Poppy Lee Friar. The band have been nominated for NPR’s Tiny Desk.

And fans in Ukraine can’t wait for the band to return.

Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/68609052022-01-06T10:17:58-05:002022-03-09T11:43:05-05:00CD Review: Southbound 75 – Tales From The Black Swamp by Antony Bailey for Country Music News International
The country quintet Southbound 75 have been making shockwaves across the domestic and international music scene of late with their much-anticipated album ‘Tales From The Black Swamp’. The music was recorded in Nashville and has received a warm reception from music lovers around the world.

They were once asked by the late legendary artist Prince if they thought ‘’The cream will rise to the top’’ to which singer-songwriter Mark Lorenzo responded to say they it would, and if the truth was to be revealed, they are well on their way to doing just that. The record consists of 11 original tracks that are well worth downloading from any one the several online platforms from which it is available.

The first track on the album ‘Let It Burn’ contains both a subtle and fiery intro to kickstart what is an album packed with resounding country anthems, carrying its audience into the New Year with a touch of optimism and an abundance of belief as it finishes on a crescendo, or in other words, a high note. ‘Not Ready To Say I’m Sorry Yet’ continues the momentum in terms of music packed with power and energy.

The song fluctuates a little more dynamically in-between different sections of the song to create a bit more ambience and tension. The lyrics push a narrative concerned with a broken relationship that had been hanging barely by a thread, hence the lyrics, ‘’Just not ready to say I’m sorry yet’’ which suggests emotional trauma.

‘Wild And Young’ brings an injection of optimism into the music as the lyrics tell a tale of being young, wild, and carefree. The band seem to relive their youth with this song by singing about young love and ‘’Skinny dipping in the summer heat / I remember we were wild and young’’. The song is a feelgood track, serving its audience as summer soundtrack.

‘Crazy’ is about being crazy in love with somebody whom they simply cannot seem to be without. The song certainly tugs on the heart-strings and offers insight along with reflection into the power of love in addition to simply just knowing when something is meant to be.

‘Spilled Champagne’ was initially released as a single and also finds itself on the album. The tune has been met with appraisal and has already had lots of airtime in the U.S with at least 45 radio stations in the U.S alone playing the song. ‘Whiskey And Wine’ fits the bill in typical country fashion. The song title alone would immediately encourage its audience to think of bourbon and a tale of the deep south. Short, powerful improvised fills combined with ‘’Whiskey and a whole lot of sweet red wine’’ depicts and image of driving a roof-top car down a wide-open country road on a hot summers’ eve.

‘Missing Carolina’ is a heartfelt piece of music, singing about loneliness and ends the album on a rather sombre note. The record, overall, is packed with raw emotion and energy and is without doubt one of the standout country albums of the year. The band are tipped to do great things over the course of the New Year and beyond so be sure to download this album and follow their social media pages to keep track of the band’s upcoming releases and tour dates.
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/68207652021-11-24T20:35:24-05:002021-11-24T20:36:31-05:00SOUTHBOUND 75 ALBUM RELEASE PARTY for TALES FROM THE BLACK SWAMP AT THE DALLAS BULL TAMPA FLORIDA OCT 29th
By Patty McCall

Playing on 45 radio stations so far! Other songs on the new cd “Stumble”, “Daddy’s Liquor Cabinet”,” Not Ready to Say I’m Sorry Yet” and “Whiskey and Wine.”

Southbound 75 band members with THT Patty McCall and James Johnson

Southbound 75 is managed by Bob Morell (Former President of Sony Red) and Country Music heavyweight, Dewayne Brown. Jason Ashcraft, JWA Media handles PR.

Southbound 75 played their first show in December of 2018 and are making a name for themselves. They played from Ohio to Key West, been invited to play the Suwannee River Festival and played multiple shows at the Florida State Fair.

Mark Lorenzo is the lead singer and songwriter. He had been writing rock songs for years, with successful placings on TV shows and sports programs. He also had an active career as a touring musician in a rock band. After the band started playing in country bars Mark realized he liked telling stories and making the music more fun. He listened to country music growing up with his Mom. Mark is originally from Ohio.

Mark’s Quote “I wish someone had told me to not play it safe and to take more chances. Don’t worry about what people think and you will be a success.”

Kevin Doris is the rhythm guitar player, occasionally banjo player and sings backup vocals. He was inspired by his father who encouraged him to reach for his dreams and work hard to fulfil them. Kevin is from Jacksonville Florida.

Anthony August is the lead guitarist. Originally auditioned to be the drummer. Anthony also plays the bass guitar and Mandolin. He moved to Tampa from Dallas Texas. Anthony is passionate about teaching others. He teaches music students all over the country.

Gregg Giacobbe is the drummer and was inspired by his neighbor in Illinois who also played the drums. He met Mark and Anthony about 4 years ago. Gregg is sponsored by Bosphorus Cymbals, creators of 100% handmade cymbals.

Vance Eskesen is the bass player, who grew up listening to old country music like artists Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard. I really hear that in his voice as he sings backup vocals. He grew up in Colorado.

I really enjoyed being in the green room interviewing this group of seasoned musicians that know what they want in life. Each one has a great story of what they experienced in the music world to now become part of Southbound 75 rising stars!

Southbound 75 will be making an impact in the community with the release of their Christmas song “Where’s Santa Now” collaborating with P.A.I.N. Prevent Abuse in Neighborhoods.

Sat Nov 20th Southbound 75 will perform the song at Bourbon on Main venue, New Port Richey, Florida.

I recently moved to Tampa, Florida from Oklahoma. I was in search of finding that good country band to listen to on weekends. Not only good music but a Halloween party with the fans of Southbound 75. This was my first time at the Dallas Bull, Tampa’s premier Country Club. Many artists such as Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney and Jake Owen have all performed at the Dallas Bull. Tracy Byrd will be performing Nov. 12th.
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/68207642021-11-24T20:32:23-05:002021-11-24T20:32:23-05:00Exclusive magazine - CD Review
Title - Tales From The Black Swamp
Artist - Southbound 75

For those not in the know, Southbound 75 are set to officially release their highly-anticipated first full length studio album, Tales From The Black Swamp, on Friday, October 29th, 2021 via Bad Jeu Jeu Records and The Orchard.

The new set of tunes was recorded at Omni Sound Studio in Nashville, and produced by music city hitmaker Bill McDermott (Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, George Strait), who credited the Florida-based quintet by saying, “I think these guys are great for today’s country music because they have a rock ‘edge’ that I think country is already moving towards, and I think they want more of. I think these guys are primed to be there when that happens, and they’re gonna help spearhead it.”

1. Let It Burn
2. Not Ready To Say I’m Sorry Yet
3. Wild & Young
4. Crazy
5. Spilled Champagne
6. Friend of the Bride
7. Stumble
8. Daddy’s Liquor Cabinet
9. Long Way Home
10. Whiskey & Wine
11. Missing Carolina

This vibrantly alive and fully heartfelt full-length debut album, opens on the gently raucous Let It Burn and the one-two country rock punch of Not Ready To Say I’m Sorry Yet and backs those up seamlessly with the foot-tapper Wild & Young, the mid-tempo balladry of Crazy and then we get both the free flowing rhythms of Spilled Champagne and the beautifully crafted Friend of the Bride.

Up next is one of my own personal favorites, the upbeat, fun and loud sing-along of Stumble which is itself followed by the euphorically-charged Daddy’s Liquor Cabinet, then come the melodic country rock of both Long Way Home and the lyrically addictive Whiskey & Wine, the album (sadly) closing on the lonesome hipsway of Missing Carolina.

“We are so excited to finally get our debut album out on October 29,” said chief songwriter and front man Mark Lorenzo. “I am pretty sure we’ve experienced about every delay we could with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we’ve finally reached the finish line, and are excited about our new partnerships with Bad Jeu Jeu Records, Bob Morelli at Cool Is Forever, and everyone else on our team that has helped us reach our goal of getting this record out in a big way!”

The band recently introduced the album’s newest single Spilled Champagne to country radio on PlayMPE, where more than a dozen stations throughout the south and midwest have already picked up the song for airplay.

Exclusively premiered by SCENES Media in May, the song has a somewhat laughable backstory about spending entirely too much money on a girl that is just way out of your league.

“When we wrote the song, it started out as just a funny story,” said Lorenzo. “But as we began playing the song live, fans started telling us about their own life experiences with similar situations. Not necessarily flying to the islands, but a few actually got to the ‘Diamonds’ stage, so that helped make the song way more authentic!”
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/67758352021-10-14T13:07:47-04:002021-10-14T13:07:47-04:00Meet Nashville’s Rising Stars: Mark Lorenzo of Southbound 75
I wish someone had told me to not play it safe and to take more chances. Don’t worry about what people think and that you will be a big success. Alternatively, I wish someone would’ve stressed the importance of only working with good people. There was a great yearly show that we lost because of a crew member a few years ago. That was a lesson that was tough to learn.

As a part of our series about Nashville’s rising stars, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Mark Lorenzo of Southbound 75.

Southbound 75’s story started when Radio Promotion legend Bill Scull heard lead songwriter Mark Lorenzo’s tune “Little Breakdown” for the first time at an ASCAP demo review session. Scull, who had worked in the industry for years, including with Clive Davis, singled Lorenzo out, and signed him. Playing their first show in 2018, Southbound 75 has steadily grown a large fanbase throughout their home state of Florida, with numerous live shows from Key West to Cleveland, Ohio. In October 2021, the band will release their highly anticipated debut album, Tales From The Black Swamp, produced by Nashville hit-maker Bill McDermott, and being released on Bad Jeu Jeu Records via The Orchard. The newest single from the album, “Spilled Champagne,” exclusively premiered by SCENES Media and also featured on CMT’s weekly Spotify playlist The Roundup, is an upbeat, radio-friendly country rock song with a somewhat laughable backstory about spending entirely too much money on a girl that is just way out of your league. Lorenzo’s songs have been used on TV shows, sports programming, DVDs, Cartoons and more such as; “ESPN College Football;” “Shark” (CBS); “90210” (CW); “Threshold” (CBS); “Girlfriends” (CW) and “3lbs” on (CBS).

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Can you tell us the story of how you grew up?

Myparents got married in Northern Minnesota and my dad’s job as a toy/craft inventor got him transferred to Toledo, Ohio where I showed up on the scene and grew up. Only-child, some say spoiled, I say I was left alone to come up with plenty of hobbies. I played every sport possible, spent plenty of time creating art and learning how to play music. Eventually, I wrote songs and recorded them by playing all the parts.

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path?

My first obsession with wanting to play music was when I was walking down my street as a kid around 11 years old and my neighbor's garage door was open and there was a band in there playing they were having such a great time I couldn’t believe my neighbors were playing music. I never looked back!

Can you tell us the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

I have been following a weird Prince path. I got to meet him backstage at a show in Cincinnati, I recorded at Sunset Sound in the same Studio that Prince used, and my production manager and Monitor Engineer toured with Prince for years. I am still friends with Prince’s old monitor guy and I still can never get enough of the old Prince Stories.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I was playing drums in a festival in South Florida in the stadium, as I was sitting on my drum riser my seat/thrown broke and I fell off the back of the drum riser. Don’t buy cheap gear.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?

Right now we are working on releasing our first record as Southbound 75 and we really have met some great people doing this record. From working with Robert Morelli, the former President of Sony Red Records to working in some of the best studios in Nashville with the best players in the world. The amount of talent that has helped us on this record really just causes me to pause, look how far we’ve come and be thankful.

We are very interested in diversity in the entertainment industry. Can you share three reasons with our readers about why you think it’s important to have diversity represented in film and television? How can that potentially affect our culture?

I don’t believe in Diversity for diversity’s sake but I think being more inclusive brings in different points of view to any production. If those ideas are allowed to be explored, they will naturally reach a wider audience. And while exploring those different points of view or opinions, one can learn how to reach outside of their comfort zone. Very few great things are created within an artist’s comfort zone. You need to push the boundaries, get a reaction, good or bad, to be memorable.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

You have to play the music that you love — or in the real world, do what you love. There is nothing that will kill your love of music faster than playing a style of music you hate just for the money.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

It would definitely be in the area of healing — I love the idea that frequencies, music, vibrations can heal. Maybe that is why I have been drawn to music. Music can bring people together, get people fired up or make them move. There is just something about music.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

There are a ton of people who have helped me when they really had no reason to. Jan Seedman has been my publisher for years. For many of those years, I didn’t make him enough to eat lunch but he has always offered to help me whenever I needed it, in whatever role would help. Mike Stuckey gave up more time, money and effort than even I did to help make my shows the best possible. And Craig Diable has been our Yoda behind the scenes. He continues to help every day to put us first in this crazy world of music.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

When I was working at the advertising agency, the owner, Jim Cooper, always said, “Keep it moving.” I find myself using it all the time. If something bad happens, you can’t quit, just “Keep it moving.” If something great happens, “Keep it moving.” The point is you don’t stop, you may pause, but always “Keep it moving.”

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. :-)

I would love to have lunch with John Varvatos. He has created his own lifestyle. From the clothes, he designs to stores, to his record label and the way he incorporates music into everything. It’s a vibe, it’s a Detroit thing, it’s a cool thing. I just love the way it all fits together as an artist.

Band to host album release shows in Nashville, September 29 at the The Local & in Tampa, October 29 at the Dallas Bull

TAMPA, Fla. - Southbound 75 are set to officially release their highly-anticipated first full length studio album, Tales From The Black Swamp, on Friday, October 29 via Bad Jeu Jeu Records and The Orchard (orcd.co/talesfromtheblackswamp).

“We are so excited to finally get our debut album out on October 29,” said chief songwriter and frontman Mark Lorenzo. “I am pretty sure we’ve experienced about every delay we could with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we’ve finally reached the finish line, and are excited about our new partnerships with Bad Jeu Jeu Records, Bob Morelliat Cool Is Forever, and everyone else on our team that has helped us reach our goal of getting this record out in a big way!”

The band recently introduced the album’s newest single “Spilled Champagne” to country radio on PlayMPE, where more than a dozen stations throughout the south and midwest have already picked up the song for airplay.

Album Release Shows Planned in Nashville & Tampa

Southbound 75 are planning two FREE open to the public album release shows to celebrate the release of Tales From The Black Swamp. They’ll kick it off in Nashville at 6pm CT on Wednesday, September 29 at The Local. On release week, they’ll host a special celebration in their hometown of Tampa on Friday, October 29 headlining a release party at the Dallas Bull.

“We really worked hard on getting the album to sound like the way we sound when playing out live,” said Lorenzo. “So when you come see us live, then listen to the songs later, you know it’s our songs, our sounds but it matches your memory of the show.”

About Southbound 75:

Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/67182962021-08-16T10:46:51-04:002022-01-28T15:18:19-05:00New Video to Debut on The Country Network July 15th!
DId you miss the premiere?
Songwriter Mark Lorenzo had been writing rock songs for years, with successful placings on TV shows and sports programs, such as “ESPEN College Football,” “Shark (CBS),” “90210” and “Girlfriends” (both CW).

He also had an active career as a touring musician, which took a decisive turn when his rock band started playing country bars. He realized that he felt trapped writing rock songs. He liked telling stories and making the music more fun.

So, at the end of his rock band’s last tour, he contacted a producer friend and announced that he wanted to do a country album. He went back to his notebooks where he had the start of several story-based songs; a few of his old rock numbers, he found, sounded even better as country tunes. Soon enough, the producer and he had put together a whole album.

He wanted to go back on the road in support of the album and started putting a new band together. At first, he auditioned folks he did not know well who just wanted the gig.

Eventually, he turned to friends he had made in music over the years. “You know,” Mark says, “when, you’re in the middle of nowhere, and it’s two in the morning, you got to get along. So, I’ve been very lucky. My bandmates are all great guys. And incredibly talented. We fill in each other’s gaps.”

Mark reached out first to a drummer he knew well, Greg Giacobbe. The two of them thought of other friends, eventually adding Kevin Doris on guitar, Waylon Baker on Lead Guitar. Vance Eskesen on bass, and Mark Guini.

As the band came together, radio promotion legend, Bill Scull, heard Mark’s tune, “Little Breakdown,” at an ASCAP demo review session, and helped Mark and his band get to the next level.

Southbound 75 soon hit the road, playing their first show in December 2018. They toured all through Mark’s native Florida and the Midwest, steadily building a fan base. Recognized as one of Reverb Nation’s Best New Country Acts, they were also named as Best New Country Band by Tampa Bay Musicians Network.

In January 2020, they played the Florida State Fair every day and then went to a huge outdoor festival at Janus Live in St. Pete just before Covid shut everything down. Listening to their music, it’s easy to imagine them at venues like State Fairs and outdoor music festivals. Southbound 75 has a big, rollicking sound, and the kind of catchy choruses that have people singing along on before they know it.

Southbound 75’s new single, “Spilled Champagne,” has just that kind of sing-along appeal. It’s about a country boy falling in love with an L.A. girl, with disastrous consequences to his wallet but, in the end, no regrets.

I asked Mark which of his bandmates had the expensive girlfriend.

“Oh, once we started playing it, we found out everybody has had that girlfriend. There’s always that one person you’re stretching a little bit for and you start feeling it in the wallet. We had actually hit on a nearly universal experience.”

Enjoy “Spilled Champagne.” The experience may leave you broke, but you’ll never forget it–at least, the parts you can remember.
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/65556672021-02-22T14:17:26-05:002022-05-22T11:29:45-04:00Cadium Signs Scott Rose

Cadium signs Scott Rose, the multi-faceted singer/songwriter/producer, to a publishing deal. The founder of the metal act, Rikets, will also be bringing the band back in a new incarnation with a new album, due this year.

Rose’s creative history is littered with collaborations with former members of Creed, Breaking Benjamin, and Powerman 5000. He is also the other creative half of the country rock act, Havala (co-founded by Southbound 75’s Mark Lorenzo). The deal is primarily two-fold, as it will include Rose’s back-catalog, (Rikets included) and future works with an array of songwriters.

Havala just released a new song, “Too Sober,” which is a Rose/Lorenzo collaboration.

The Road Ahead

While the rock journeyman has worked in various facets of the entertainment industry (actor, creative manager within the music department of Warner Bros. studios, songwriter and music producer), Rose is best known for fronting Rikets. The midwest metal outfit came up during the Nu Metal era of rock in the late 90’s, releasing albums on Corporate Punishment Records. The band also had a healthy tour schedule, opening for acts such as Korn, Five Finger Death Punch and In This Moment, to name a few.

Rising through the ranks of metal and rock, the future seemed bright for the guys, but misfortune struck. Rose contracted a very rare illness around 2009 that almost cost him his life. With the help of a great medical staff and an over-arching will to survive, the Cleveland transplant by way of Los Angeles was able to return to almost perfect health; however, it was Rikets that didn’t survive, due to issues within the band.

Rikets Hiatus

Post Rikets, Rose worked with a variety of musicians, not as the focal point a group, but as collaborator. Co-writes and production sessions included working with Brett Hestla (Creed) and continuing his creative relationship with Rikets producer Ben Schigel (Machine Gun Kelly, Drowning Pool, Chimaira), and the aforementioned Lorenzo, as well as others.

Last year, after a 10 year break from Rikets, Rose felt the itch to bring Rikets back, signing to manager Nic Bell’s label, Godsize Records. The details of Rikets 2.0 has yet to be announced, but in the meantime, Godsize will be re-releasing All American Death Cult March 2. Rikets also plans to release a new album later in the year. Cadium signs Scott Rose not only with rock and metal in mind, but because of his continued work in the country rock sector and beyond.

The prospect of a successful Rikets redux is quietly optimistic. Rikets fans should be optimistic, as well.

Michael James mixed two Eric Church songs that are in the just-released film documentary “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man.” Leavell, the legendary pianist/keyboardist whose career spans five decades and includes work with The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton and John Mayer, to name a few, is revealed as more than a musician; he is also a custodian of the environment with commitment to family. (Coinciding with his environmental efforts, Leavell is co-founder of one of the most informative websites on the environment, Mother Nature Network.)

James came into the project through the film’s director, Allen Farst, who has hired James in the past to compose music for industrial projects and commercial ads. Some of those projects include Cessna and Dodge Ram.

Birth of “The Tree Man”

Farst’s journey of the Chuck Leavell project began in 2017, when Farst began traveling to various cities to interview not only the film’s leading man, but Bonnie Raitt, president Jimmy Carter, Eric Church and many others. It is two Eric Church songs that the country star performed live, in which James was enlisted to mix. The songs are “The Load Out” and “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” (an Allman Brothers cover). Farst, obviously was happy with the mixes and the word is Church is happy, as well.

According to James, he was contacted by the Ohio-based producer/director during the nascent stages of the film’s development, but James’ role, at the time, was not defined; however, when the time came for the northern California-based writer/producer/mixer’s talents to be used, James got the call.

“Chuck Leavell” Accolades and Beyond

The two mixes by Michael James for Chuck Leavell, by all accounts, went well. As far as critical nods to the film, that too has gone well. The film has already won multiple festival awards, including the People’s Choice Award at the Sedona Film Festival, earlier this year. The film has made it into some theaters, but due to COVID-19, it’s probably easier to access the film through the various VOD platforms. Here is the trailer to the film.

The country act began stringing together dates last year all over the Sunshine State, from Tampa (the band’s hometown) to Jacksonville, Key West and places in between. So when COVID reared its ugly crowns, the state took a mini holiday in comparison to states like California and New York and then basically re-opened.

From a health standpoint, Florida appeared to be reckless and self-centered, however, Southbound 75 created some hard boundaries to protect themselves from the virus (coupled with the same for venues), which allowed the band to continue their roadshow throughout the state.

The momentum from last year grew into more dates and higher guarantees. Couple that with their single and video, “Not Ready to Say I’m Sorry Yet” (over 100,000 views, so far on Facebook), the band reached that certain plateau that every musical act wishes for: demand by venues and show promoters to book them.

If you’re wondering when I’m going to get to the point, we’re finally here.

The Grind

SB75 have done a lot of the thankless work to get themselves to where they are now as a regional unsigned act. The thankless work includes playing covers for several hours a night, playing in inclement weather (i.e., heavy rain), admittedly playing some very poorly attended shows and, frankly, opening for some other regional acts instead of making them a co-headliner. These obstacles can run an act off the highway, but the country rockers endured and their work has lead to bookings well into next year.

Speaking with band founder/singer/songwriter/guitarist, Mark Lorenzo, he admitted that he could have booked the band even more with venues that find the band to be a hot ticket, but he wants to ensure the group is available for possible spring and summer festivals next year (depending on the status of the virus, of course).

With all the elements that are required for success, the key ingredient in all of this is the performance and/or the songs. Southbound 75 found that combination in their song set, stage presence and the overall personality that engages audiences and then draws fans to the merch table.

SB75’s efforts have also merited them a few citations, including being chosen 2019’s favorite country act by the Tampa Bay Music Network.

Creating a Team

One of the building blocks to the band’s success, so far, has been the hiring of Bernard Porter of PCG Universal. Porter introduced Southbound 75 to various people in the country music industry, including famed Nashville producer, Bill McDermott, Will Muse of Will Muse Media and publicist, Jason Ashcraft. McDermott took the band’s songs to another level and the work done by Muse and Ashcraft has been paying off. Muse has helped to increase the band’s social media presence, which was once stagnant, and the quintet has picked up some specialty airplay that they wouldn’t have normally been able to capture on their own, through Ashcraft’s efforts.

In order for Southbound 75 to reach a new level in its career, the band must build itself up to be a consistent headliner throughout the state, connect more dots (more radio, press, new audiences) and then duplicating the process in surrounding parts of the south.

Could SB75’s fortunes suddenly become unfortunate? Yes, there’s always that risk, but for now, the band are doing all the right things.

If you speak to live acts in California, for example, many will tell you that they are not happy being cooped up in their living spaces and not being able to unleash their creativity in front of their fans. Due to Florida guidelines, however, the state has allowed country rockers Southbound 75 to reach a new level in its career.

In case you haven’t been following the story, Florida has a different attitude toward quarantines and lock downs. And this is where Southbound 75 comes in.

Could SB75’s fortunes suddenly become unfortunate? Yes, there’s always that risk, but for now, the band are doing all the right things.

The Tampa Bay Music Network reaches from north of Spring Hill, FL and south to Bradenton, FL and includes a population of well over 1.5 million people.

Lead vocalist, Mark Lorenzo says, "Thanks so much to Victor Lima and everyone at The Tampa Bay Music Network! This is such a great honor for us to be recognized by the Musicians and the Industry experts that keep the Bay Rockin! Keep up the great work and we look forward to making our hometown proud for years to come."

TBMN has several Music Events they are known for: TBMN Annual Musicians Appreciation Party, TBMN Music Award Show & Ceremony, The Florida Music Expo, TBMN Music Showcases, Florida Music TV.com & Florida Music Expo.com.
Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/64591242020-07-22T17:19:44-04:002020-10-19T15:59:32-04:00Sixlight Composes Ads for Lexus

Sixlight Productions, the duo of Curtis Martin and Rob Endling, has broken into the world of composing, which is never an easy thing to do. As a publisher who has represented composers with much more experience than Curtis and Rob, it’s encouraging to see people in the film world recognize the duo based on their track record. And Martin and Endling did it with a bang: Sixlight composes ads for Lexus.

I have worked with Rob and Curtis for over a year now and watched them (from a distance) turn out some amazing work, only to have life get in the way and compel them to re-invent themselves. The guys have worked in rock and pop, solely as engineers, then producers, then writer/producers, as well as mixers. They have navigated a road in an industry filled with as many potholes as a neglected city street, only to find another path to more opportunities.

THE MOVE

Earlier this year, Martin and Endling made the decision to uproot from the comfortable music landscape of Las Vegas to Atlanta, where they believed their talents might lead to greater opportunities. While there is no consensus on their 2,000-mile move east just yet, it turns out that their path to creating music for television ads began in Los Angeles, leading to two Lexus commercials.

BREAKTHROUGH

LA-based director, Jake Stark, gave Endling and Martin a chance to prove themselves in an area that is not about finding the right radio sound for a recording artist, but coming up with a soundscape that must satisfy very discernable advertising executives and a marketing department of a major automobile maker.

They succeeded.

Lexus recently released one the Martin/Endling-composed spots, “Lexus Accelerators – Inspiring Others Through a Passion for Life,” and by all accounts, everyone involved is happy with the 37-second clip. A second ad composed by the new Atlantans is in the can waiting to be released.

The moral of the story (so far)? Continue being creative, both as an artist and as a business person, while maintaining a compelling bedside manner. These attributes don’t guarantee a foot in the door, but as Sixlight composes ads for Lexus again in the future (hopefully), it can be said they certainly helped. #Sixlight #SixlightProductions #Lexus #Lexusad #composers #JakeStark

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Alt-country rockers Southbound 75’s new video for their recently released debut single “Not Ready To Say I’m Sorry Yet” exclusively premieres today on The Country Network (TCN). The catchy, hook-driven country rock tune was written by lead singer Mark Lorenzo, with the audio recorded and produced by hit-making Nashville producer Bill McDermott (Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, George Strait). The video was produced and directed by Josh Sikkema, and is also watchable on the Tampa-based quartet’s YouTube page (youtu.be/avQEw3tbISo).

“This video really captured the point of the song,” said Lorenzo. “All the metaphorical signs are pointing to exactly what he should do, but the guy just keeps only seeing what he wants.”

“The whole song started with the first line, ‘What you are to me is a cell phone full of pissed off memories…’ and the whole song was done in an hour because it was true. I knew I was wrong but I wasn’t ready to admit it. I think that song just resonates well with our fans live. We always knew it was going to be the first single.”

Southbound 75 was recently named as Best New Country Band by The Tampa Bay Musicians Network.
Since signing to Bill McDermott’s Roxy Entertainment Group, Southbound 75 debuts its first video, July 15. “Not Ready to Say I’m Sorry Yet” will premiere on The Country Network.

The video intends to add momentum to the Tampa, Florida-based country rockers, who recently played a live show in front of a live audience (but safely, of course). Hopefully the video will lead to more social-distanced performances in the near future.

The period of the initial lockdown allowed the band more time to prepare the video and set a target date for its ultimate release.

The Country Network

The Country Network has been at the forefront of introducing new country artists and feeds into over 50 U.S. markets, potentially reaching millions of viewers. While it can be a challenge for any artist to remain in rotation, getting added is a significant first step for Southbound 75 in order to reach a wider audience. SB75 made the announcement of the premiere last week and teased the video with a clip. By all accounts, the announcement has been well received.

Video Debut and Beyond

Southbound 75 are not counting solely on the “Not Ready to Say I’m Sorry Yet” video to open up new markets, but the band do intend to use the video as a tool as part of their strategy to grow beyond the southeast. As mentioned in previous posts, the guys have been working with various booking agencies in the region. Hopefully this will lead to live dates that will help boost awareness and build popularity. While the virus has thrown a curve into the general plans of a typical album cycle, “Sorry” will be the focus track for the band well beyond the summer. When Southbound 75 debuts its first video since the REG signing, it will also be exciting to watch the production company, publicity and the band work in concert toward making the video debut a splash.

On the heels of their latest track, “Custodian,” Piel releases “Easy As It Feels” as a short film. British actors, Adam Fielding and Poppy Lee Friar produced the video. The tandem took lead singer Tiki Lewis’ very personal lyrics and created a vignette that offers hope through harrowing times. Friar directed the clip.

ACTORS MOVE BEHIND THE CAMERA

Fielding and Friar may not be very well known in the U.S., but in their native England, they have quite a track record. Friar’s role as Jayne Torvill in “Torvill and Dean” is one of several of her stand-out performances. Both actors were in the successful television series, “Ackley Bridge,” among other projects. The two formed Poppy Field Productions and “Easy” is one of their latest projects. The UK transplants befriended Lewis and Piel bassist Jonathan Burkes by chance. Soon an idea for a video was born.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG (AND VIDEO)

The gist of the song is about Lewis bracing for the moment when she is informed that her mother has passed. The two were very close and Lewis’ mother was terminally ill. The song conveys the impending sadness and the path through a difficult time. Friar and Fielding take the emotion of the song and apply it to last month’s riots in Los Angeles and it’s aftermath.

Friar was struck by “Piel’s serene and moving song,” and adds that it, “evoked the appropriate feeling to accompany the troubling and political visuals I had in mind.” The parallel between song and video can be drawn after noting Fielding’s character as an angel visiting Earth for the first time and taking in it’s darker nature, but with hope for the future.

A POTENTIAL HIT

“Easy As It Feels” begs to be a multi-format hit at radio. The track could work at Pop and Adult Contemporary, as well as Modern Rock (depending on how the band is introduced to the format), should it be marketed and promoted properly. Cisco De Luna (a Cadium writer) produced the track, creating a smooth, calming aura, aided by a light-synth flowing throughout the song, which juxtaposes nicely against the mostly morose tone of the story.

Piel releases “Easy As It Feels” when the world is faced with a rare uncertain moment in history, but keeps its eyes focused on the light at the end of the tunnel.

This past Thursday (6/24), NPR’s Tiny Desk series, “Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf,” showcased five more finalists, one of them being Piel. The YouTube live stream included discussion by Tiny Desk’s Bob Boilen and World Cafe’s Raina Douris. The Tiny Desk judges discuss Piel at some length on the live stream. It included one other band, a rapper, a yodeler and an R&B solo artist, so it was a diverse group of acts on the bill.

Piel was the fourth act to be discussed. The Boilen-Douris tandem did a great job discussing the band, but it was Douris who took the reigns when informing listeners about the L.A.-based group. Piel’s Tiny Desk entry was their performance of “Custodian” and Douris summed up the meaning of the song. Many can interpret the word, “Custodian,” as someone in charge of maintenance of property or someone in charge of someone else’s affairs. Douris explained correctly that the song is actually about taking care of oneself, as well as taking care of others. She also mentioned that the song sends this message while eschewing a political position. Piel lead singer, Tiki Lewis, expressed to me that the WXPN deejay explained to viewers what the song is all about, perfectly.

What was also said by Douris and Boilen, without saying it directly, was that “Custodian” is a really good song. (Hint: Piel will be releasing another new song that could easily be a radio smash. More on that another time.) There is no doubt that the track has an infectious groove and a great melody.

As the Tiny Desk judges discuss Piel, what stands out is that neither could quite put their finger on the band’s sound. This further confirms what I have been saying all along: When you can’t easily pigeonhole an act, it’s a good thing.

Jonathan Burkes (aka Jawnee), co-founder and bassist of Piel, had the instinct to throw the band’s hat in the ring for this year’s Tiny Desk contest. This led Piel to join the “Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf” series for 2020, selected by the contest’s judges. The band will be discussed this Thursday June 25, noon Pacific/3pm Eastern.

From an A&R perspective, there are very few acts that have the goods to go on to have a successful music career, but as a former NBA head coach once said about talent, “there’s plenty to go around.” Still, to make it this far in a very competitive contest (some acts have entered Tiny Desk multiple times over the years) and being selected out of so many entrants makes a statement.

THE CATTLE CALL

The first step in the selection process for Tiny Desk is to submit a live performance video. Like any contest, there are rules and regulations and Tiny Desk is no exception. One of the rules is that the video must include a desk of some sort (I’ll leave that story for you to research) and Piel showcased their desk while they performed their EDM-style song “Custodian.”

Months went by after the initial submission, but then in April the band was informed that they had made the next cut.

Then came today’s announcement.

BACKGROUND BRIEFING ON TINY DESK

Tiny Desk got thrown off its axis this year when the COVID-19 virus hit. This compelled the contest managers to pivot to another way to keep the contest relevant, but keeping all parties safe. This year, judges created Top Shelf, leading Piel to join the “Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf” series. The weekly series highlights some of the contestants, where the judges discuss the music of some of the nominees and invite not only the talent to interact on the Top Shelf Youtube live page, but welcome fans and others to weigh in, as well.

Judges Bob Boilen of Tiny Desk and WXPN’s Raina Douris will lead Thursday’s event, which is the third installment of the eight-part series.

The aforementioned Jawnee, as well as Piel co-founder and lead singer, Tiki Lewis, will also be participating in the event. Viewers are encouraged to RSVP for show reminders.

Going back to early last year at The Hideout studio, Curtis Martin and Rob Endling were presented with an opportunity to work with rising metal act, Ded. Martin and Endling made the most of it, by not only co-writing the upcoming album, but adding production to it. The result, so far, is the co-write of “Eyes Sewn Shut,” which is on the current EP (or “micro release”), Mannequin Eyes. (The other song is “A Mannequin Idol”.) There’s a good chance that the Curtis Martin, Rob Endling Co-writes with Ded will be mutually beneficial.

The full album would probably be out by now, but COVID-19 entered the picture, and so the full album will be released at a later date. According to all accounts, it will be released later this year.

BACKGROUND

Working with Ded came after Martin and Endling individually and collectively worked with other rock acts, such as Otherwise and Santa Cruz. In fact, the first two singles to Otherwise’s album Defy, are Endling co-writes. Even before the Otherwise and Santa Cruz projects, Curtis and Rob worked with various independent acts under their Sixlight Productions moniker.

By all accounts, Ded liked what Martin and Endling were coming up with and why one song collaboration turned into several.

IN THE STUDIO

There is no secret sauce to Curtis and Rob’s success so far, however, Rob is more of the rock writer/producer and Curtis is more of the pop writer in the partnership. Some of those collaborations have included rising rapper, Ekoh and pop singer, Rachel Lorin.

But getting back to the Curtis Martin, Rob Endling co-writes with Ded, the EP has been getting traction at active rock, with “A Mannequin Idol” being the lead track. Its steady climb up the radio charts will hopefully build some momentum ahead of the full album’s release.

Since the song titles for the rest of the album have not yet been finalized, it’s a bit premature to talk about them Ded’s label, Surtone, assesses it’s options on how and when to release the album, the titles will eventually be revealed. #metal #co-writes #CurtisMartin #RobEndling #Ded #newmusic #upcomingmusic #amannequinidol #eyessewnshut

Southbound75tag:southbound75.com,2005:Post/64591312020-06-09T11:32:42-04:002020-10-19T15:59:33-04:00Cadium Music Adds A&R to Its Services

For those who don’t know, my background is in A&R, both in the talent acquisition arena, as well as finding songs for artists. For years I have come across great talent, talent that had the potential to become national, if not global acts, only to watch them die on the vine, partially due to lack of exposure. Maybe I could have allotted a little more time to these acts, but as a publisher, my focus and attention was largely devoted to my writers. With this in mind, Cadium Music adds A&R tastemaker to its services.

And the focus and attention of A&R will begin tomorrow.

From this point forward, I will attempt to point a spotlight on acts that are as good as, if not better than, what’s currently on the charts.

Some of these acts might be affiliated with Cadium Music, but many will not. The point is to give these acts exposure that they can most likely use.

THE PROCESS

I will not have a “band of the week,” nor will I be blasting lists of bands that I think you should hear. I am very selective and will only spotlight acts that have great songs, i.e., material that can compete at commercial radio and turn a profit for a record label. After my initial mention of said acts, I will only post about them when I believe that something significant has taken place in their career. Should an act move on to bigger and better things, my coverage of said act will taper off (after all, why would you want to read about a band that you’ve already heard of?). And then, I will most likely move on to the next gem. I can’t say for certain whether there might be some overlap by covering more than one act at a time, but my intention is to focus on only one.

My standards are high. A sliver of what’s out there will get my attention. I will not compromise when it comes to my opinion of excellence. It’s what has allowed me to align myself early in the development of acts that have sold over 90 million records worldwide.

I will, of course, welcome your comments, both positive and negative, but my objective, simply, is to help get what I think are the most deserving acts to the next level.

THE PURPOSE

I hope that by giving some acts a mention now and then, it will aide in helping them to become successful, however, some might not get the same results. Regardless of the outcome, I will at least be able to say that I attempted to help bring great music to the masses.

Lastly, to keep things simple, my posts will largely be right here on the Cadium Music Publishing blog page, but will post about these acts on the Cadium Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well.
Southbound 75 signed to REG (Roxy Entertainment Group). REG is Nashville producer, Bill McDermott’s company. The alt country rockers have been working with McDermott (Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, George Strait), over the last year and resulting in the band’s debut album Tales From The Black Swamp, to be released this summer. The lyric video to the band’s debut single, “Not Ready to Say I’m Sorry Yet,” is out now.

The road to signing to REG was a long, but pleasant one. Spotted by Bernard Porter of PCG Artist Development, the band was introduced to McDermott, who agreed to work with the guys. It became apparent that the band/producer relationship was a good one. What began as one recording session turned into several, resulting “Tales” album.

Immediately recognizing the level of songwriting from singer/songwriter, Mark Lorenzo, and seeing the potential of the band’s demos, McDermott brought his own sound to the songs, taking the Lorenzo-penned tracks to an even higher level. While the band was in and out of Nashville, recording with McDermott at OmniSound Studios, they were performing throughout Florida and parts of the midwest and growing their fanbase. One-off shows at bars and clubs turned into residencies (Key Largo) and private pre-shows for NCAA football games.

Once the record was completed, McDermott stepped up and signed them to REG.

Leading up to the release of Tales From The Black Swamp is the lead track, “Sorry.” The rest of the album is a mix of upbeat tracks that will cater to the country rock base, but also includes at least one ballad to off-set the band’s high energy sound.

Southbound 75 is looking to release a full video to “Sorry,” eventually. Online performances are also in the mix.

In addition to singer/lead guitarist, Lorenzo, the band is rounded out by Vance Eskesen (bass), Kevin Doris (strings) and Gregg Giacobbe (drums).
